Student accommodation is made up of different areas with various needs, from bedrooms to study areas, which therefore require a range of lighting fixtures and controls. When designing a lighting scheme for student accommodation, at Bright Source we take into account key considerations such as flexibility, quality, energy efficiency and durability.

We offer a wide range of solutions suitable for student accommodation, featuring lighting, emergency illumination, and control systems. Our products are cost-effective for educational applications, without the compromise of quality.

The Kopal is one of the most versatile fire-rated LED downlights available on the UK market. We have successfully utilised the Kopal extensively throughout the student accommodation projects we have worked on. Thanks to its excellent output and beam angle, the Kopal delivers exceptional luminance throughout open area spaces and corridors. The switchable power and colour temperature can be changed post-install, while the variety of magnetic bezels makes it an adaptable product for a wide variety of spaces. Its impressive IP65 rating means this luminaire can also be used in bathrooms or external spaces, with ensured durability.

The Hansteen is our go-to product for corridors and stairwells when quoting for student accommodation projects. This luminaire has the perfect light output and ensures even distribution to achieve the appropriate light levels, while the most appropriate output can be selected to help keep energy use to a minimum. The Hansteen has also been used with integrated PIR sensors and as emergency versions as part of our student accommodation designs. Switchable power means it can be used in a variety of spaces such as store rooms, corridors and stairwells.

These colour and power switchable luminaires are perfect for student accommodation as they can make rooms customisable, and are suitable for both bedrooms and kitchen areas, as well as in bathrooms due to the IP65 rating. This versatility makes it easier for contractors, as there is only one product to install across accommodation, as a plug and play. We also offer variants such as corridor function, sensor versions and emergency lighting options to meet each and every need in terms of aesthetic, function and safety

Student accommodation projects always have one thing in common – the need for meeting rooms and spaces for students to study. The Mesmer is the ideal solution for these types of spaces, due to its wide beam angle and low UGR. We have used the Mesmer to create visually comfortable spaces which allow students to study whenever they need to, without facing headaches or eye strain. The output and beam angle allow for wide spacings of up to 3m whilst still providing the required light levels and uniformity for comfortable study spaces.

In terms of ensuring safety and security, our Anauel emergency lighting luminaire is our go-to suggestion. This product provides great spacing and can have an open area or corridor lens. It is available in white or black, offering great flexibility for the installing contractor. It also has a self-test function that can be activated or deactivated as required via a remote control.

Student accommodation projects have varied requirements when it comes to lighting controls. More clients are now shifting to automatically ‘switching off’ lighting, using the right control system to enable this without excessive cost. By installing PIR sensors in shared common areas, the lighting can be used effectively, only when needed and when there is occupancy. These sensors are cost-effective, allowing students to save on usage and costs, but also reducing the carbon footprint to allow the building owners to meet their sustainability goals.

Rather than using a sensor in each fitting, we have proposed using one sensor to control multiple fittings for ease and innovation. During a recent 28-storey student accommodation project, we used strategically placed and fully programmed sensors which ensured that the only lights that turned on were the ones that were needed. Whilst standard sensor designs may trigger every light within the stair core, we created a completely custom design and fully commissioned each sensor to only activate the lights on the floor where the sensor is triggered. This means that in the 28-storey building, lights are only triggered across three floors, instead of all 28.

Our product range also extends to the exterior of student accommodation spaces – the Marquez has a stylish, anthracite metal housing, perfect for mounting around the perimeter of a building. With ratings of IP65 and IK10, it is guaranteed to withstand the British weather and the rigours of the outdoor environment. There are various sizes and outputs, giving the freedom of choice based on how the outside area requires lighting. Emergency versions are also available, keeping a consistent look and feel to the exterior of the building.

We have extensive experience and solutions available to meet your student accommodation needs, encompassing a comprehensive package featuring lighting, emergency illumination, and control systems.
